Tutor's digital literacy skill with English support lands student big job!

Tutoring + Digital Skills = A New Career
Spotlight: Tutor Dorothy Flora
When a determined reproductive counselor from Ecuador joined Literacy Solutions NY in Rockland County, her first goal was to become a U.S. citizen. With the guidance of a citizenship coach, she proudly achieved that milestone.
By January 2022, she was ready to take the next step—finding a better job. She was matched with Dorothy Flora, a dedicated volunteer tutor who had recently completed specialized training through the Barbara Bush Foundation and Digital Promise, earning certification as a Digital Literacy Tutor and Northstar Digital Literacy proctor.
In one-on-one sessions, Dora guided her student through:
-
Refining her healthcare career goals
-
Strengthening English for professional settings
-
Practicing interview strategies to boost confidence
-
Building connections in the healthcare field
-
Mastering essential computer skills to navigate today’s job market
A New Career Begins
Thanks to her persistence—and Dora’s targeted support—this student is now a full-time Medical Assistant working with autistic adults.
Giving Back
Now in a position to hire, she’s paying it forward by sharing job opportunities with other English learners through our program. Her note says it best:
"Hi Christina and Dora,
This is one of your students—you gave me a tutor and support in speaking English. I now work at ARC Rockland as a Medical Assistant. I'm sharing this attachment in case anyone is looking for a job. Have a wonderful afternoon and thanks for everything.
The best,
A grateful student"
Dora’s work reflects the growing mission of a volunteer literacy program: supporting learners not only in English literacy, but in building confidence, careers, and community connections.
